Who doesn't want to see their little girl dressed in something utterly classic and French? When Berlin was much younger, I'd go the full length and dress her in clothing that was traditional and formal more often. Now that playtime is much wilder and school time requires relaxed clothing, we only dress this way some of the time although we still opt for a lot of European or Japanese brands. I also feel as your little ones grow, having stylishly casual undertones makes a bit more sense. I adore this Tartan dress layered over a blouse with tights and Mary Janes. The added combination of subtleties found in the glitter bag and studs along the shoes gives this look that classic Parisian charm.
Bobo Choses is a Barcelona-based children's collection I have come to love. Each season they surprise us with a slew of unique prints and stories. The dress and cardigan shown in this look is from their A/W collection, and they are just a few of the pieces I am crazy for. Berlin doesn't normally wear maxi dresses, but this LA 90's inspired look is too special to be practical. This season Bobo Choses has included Chateau Marmont, Echo Park, and tons of leopard moments into their prints.
This look is a homage to a few of the many French brands for children I follow. The ones pictured here are Zef and Finger In The Nose. On my trips to Paris, what I look forward to the most is visiting children's stores. Berlin and I read Kiki and Coco in Paris often, since then she has become infatuated with the idea of traveling there. I plan to take her sometime soon. I think she will fall for Paris in the same way I have as well as my father who resides in the Marais part of the year.
The American Vogue "Wild At Heart" story styled by Grace Coddington, in the September issue of 1991 was a moment I have always held dear. I wasn't old enough to enjoy it at the time it was released, but when I finally did get to see those compelling black and white photos by Peter Lindeberg I was awestruck. The Chanel Motorcycle collection which was featured in the shoot has influenced the way I dress to this day. I will never forget those supermodels gathered around the streets of Brooklyn in ball gown skirts paired with moto boots and leather quilted jackets.
It's no shock that Berlin and I adore dresses and wear them any chance we can, but in casual instances they are worn with a sweatshirt or a moto jacket and sneakers or boots to create that underlying twist. This look epitomizes the hard and soft with it's sweet Wovenplay tulle dress, glitter high top Golden Goose sneakers, and a sweatshirt.
I find Hawaii to be completely intoxicating with its Luau's, hula dancers, surf culture, frangipani flowers, volcanos, and surrounding nature. I remember visiting as a little girl and coming home with a purse made out of a hand painted coconut shell and a hula grass skirt. This Aloha dress with the map of Hawaii embodies the spirit of this look. Beatrice Valenzuela, who designed the exquisite handmade sandals also makes the same shoe styles for women. An ideal shoe for both mother and daughter. The Wave book is an experience Berlin and I love to share with each other. It only has illustrations, so we get to make up a different storyline each time.
I think most mothers and daughters share a common love for leopard prints or stuffed animals. Berlin and myself both have a ton of leopard in our closets as well as a large furry leopard we have named Sesame, so it only felt right to share our love through this fun feline look.
The Petitbo jumpsuit is easy to slip on when your daughter is ready to take breaks from playing in a wet swimsuit. The Mini Rodini sweatshirt and Little Fashion Gallery tutu is playful for an early dinner with family and friends. Berlin has been wearing these Bonton slippers since she was very little, and I am always pleased to see them return each season with an update. I love the look of traditional chinese slippers.
A good moto jacket goes a long way. This one by Zara for little girls is no exception. I love to layer moto jackets over something sweet or girly. Pink is a popular color in our family. Whenever the option for pink is available, we tend to go this route. Berlin also has a love for taking pictures and collecting treasures. This leather rock bag is the perfect place to store those special discoveries. We have made a habit of never leaving home without a doll. The Petitcollin doll shown here is one of my favorites, the French company has been creating traditional dolls since 1860. Although this one is currently available in the states, I brought ours home from Paris. We call her Frenchie.
Beach trips are frequent in our family. We often visit my sister in law Sofie, who has a trailer in Paradise Cove ( such a magical community ) or my father who lives in Malibu. When packing for the beach, I try to include toys that inspire our imagination to run wild. Kiko sandals (read more about Kiko here ) which make paw imprints in the sand and a shell bag for our shell collecting have become staples. Since Berlin comes from a multicultural background, I try to expose her to as many cultures as possible. These sand castle toys in the shape of the Taj Mahal and a Pyramid are a great way to do that. Popupshop who is the designer of the swimsuit makes incredible clothes for kids with photographic prints like this, they are usually photos of animals. We love Pomme D'Api shoes! They are somewhat pricey, but the quality is wonderful.
It's always a joy to see my daughter Berlin in traditional dresses, maybe something about it reminds me of being young in London and having to wear formal floral dresses by Laura Ashley. The dress shown here is by Rachel Riley, a collection I love. I have accessorized it with fun European treats and a Zimmerman one-piece. I wear Zimmerman swimsuits myself. When I first discovered the children's collection I was smitten! Their rash guards covered in mixed femme prints are insane. We pack ours for a day on the beach or while traveling to hot destinations.
